Jud Yalkut

The roots of the collage medium in analytical cubism, the transformative interplay of Kurt Schwitters, and the psychological mysticism so central to the concept of surrealism are central to my perception of the medium. Formal concerns can be addressed as well as spatial illusions and surface tactilities. A collage constructs an inner world for the mind to enter and discover constantly new relationships and revelations. Collage can be a unique blending of lyricism and social satire. As in the prolific work of the great Surrealist artist Max Ernst, I find my creative urges synthesizing seemingly irrational relationships into poetically rich metaphorical situations, a form of visual mythopoeia.

Collage has been a continual involvement throughout my artistic career. Its concerns have evolved alongside my work in the media of film, video and installation art. Since filmic composition can be conceived as analogous to the collage medium with its philosophy of montage and editing technique, and video with its new interfaces with computer technology, it has been natural for me to explore the merging of media with closed circuit and composed video combined in installations with collage super graphics.
